Murder of Crows

Murder of Crows
12.5" x 20" - mixed media

So, I've always been into painting, drawing and/or collaging birds. For some reason, crows are a favorite of mine. I started work on this piece a very long time ago, but wasn't pleased with the border area around the patchwork crow image. I put it away so I wouldn't have to look at it. As I was spring cleaning my art supply closet, I came across it and decided to rework the border. I covered the previous crap with black, gray and brown acrylic paint. It already looked better, but I wanted to add something more. At first I painted lines reminiscent of barbed-wire. I was getting there, but it still needed something extra. Adding circles in different tints and shades of aqua did the trick. Needless to say, I'm glad this picture was pulled out of the closet and finished. Now all that's left is to frame it. Another project I will do in the coming months once I get enough work worthy of framing.

  2. Ahh, thanks. They're my favorite thing and always have been. I used to draw/paint birds eyes and it progressed to the entire body. Maybe I just wish I could fly! Between that, flowers and trees, I should just live outside. I just finished another page in my altered book and it's about recycling. The page I'm working on now has flowers. Go figure. I'll post when I get those pages done.

  4. Are you familiar with the Medicine Cardsby Jamie Sams and David Carson? In their book/deck the Crow represents (in part) Sacred Law, and is an "omen of change". When an animal appears more than usual in my world, or I am drawn to one in particular, I enjoy referring to this deck for fun and insight!
That said, I like what you've done, and reading about all the transformations your work went through! The aqua really does add nice contrast and there's a good rhythm with the circles, vs square patterns, and diagonals of the birds, making the eye dance, settle and move exactly as birds would have us do!

  5. I had heard that before. I'm Irish and Native American and it has two different meanings in our cultures. My grandfather side (Irish) The crow is an omen of death and conflict. It also has magical qualities such as shapeshifting, prophecy, etc.

To my grandmother who's full blood cherokee, he is a trickster but is one of the "power" animals.
